Course Description

Eco-Industrial Parks and Eco-Business Zones are creating a new standard for Sustainable Employment Lands. Around the world these approaches are proving that businesses and municipalities can reduce their environmental footprint, decrease the need for new infrastructure, attract sustainable employers and create green jobs - huge dividends!

Yet, anything new seems fraught with risk - we will show you how to manage/reduce the risk while reaping the benefits of these initiatives. In this program you will gain essential insights on: 1) overcoming the real and perceived information, regulatory, technical, and economic challenges associated with eco-industrial parks and eco-business zones and 2) practically and efficiently implementing these economic development strategies to attract and retain investment, jobs and clean tech companies to new and existing employment lands in your region.

Learning Objectives Using real examples, case studies, best practices and hand-on activities you will:
  • Identify and argue the economic, social and environmental business case for eco-industrial parks and eco-business zones.
  • Describe the elements of an eco-industrial park (EIP) project, from 'raw' land to site planning, infrastructure design, marketing and more
  • Describe the steps to transform your existing employment lands into an eco-business zone (EBZ) from visioning, characterization of employment lands, opportunities assessment, prioritization and planning to eco-business zone strategy development.
  • Analyze the challenges for an EIP and EBZ and develop successful strategies for overcoming them.
  • Gain advice on your EIP/EBZ project and compare and contrast its features with EIP & EBZ projects in other jurisdictions.
  • Identify "best practices" for EIPs & EBZs.
  • Identify champions and supporters of EIPs & EBZs in your region and the province.
  • Develop a network of resources for successful implementation.
Participants are encouraged to use their specific potential projects as examples. Workshop Leaders will tailor the course to offer participants specific information and solutions for their projects.
