Course Description Thriving communities and competitive businesses of the future are economically, environmentally and socially responsible and sustainable. New technologies, integrative thinking and innovative design are the springboard to resilient, flourishing communities and enterprises. What is the secret to this new approach? It is the integrative thinking of industrial ecology, a paradigm that looks to natural systems for the new principles of design and operation of community and industrial systems. Environmental footprint, local carry capacity, closed loop economies, zero waste and by-product synergies are some of the concepts that leading communities and organizations are capitalizing on today. Gain indispensable insights for the future possibilities of your business and your community in this interdisciplinary workshop. This program will open up a new world of "sustainable" possibilities.
Learning Objectives Using current case studies, best practice examples and hands-on activities you will:

  • Describe and integrate the concepts of industrial ecology and sustainable engineering with initiatives within your community and business (such as systems thinking, circular and closed loop economies and systems, zero waste and by-product synergies, mimicking of natural systems, ecological footprint and carrying capacity, collaboration and stakeholder engagement).
  • Identify the benefits and the business case for applying industrial ecology to your business, industrial developments, or operations (e.g. reduced GHGs, reduced operating costs, community support, etc.).
  • Examine recent North American and International success stories for industrial ecology and identify key success factors and best practices.
  • Identify requirements and build a plan of action to successfully use an eco-industrial approach on your next project.
  • Determine resources needed to support further eco-industrial work in your organisation.
