A Jan. 2013 Carbon Disclosure Project study "Reducing Risk and Driving Business Value"  of the largest multi-national companies and their suppliers, including Dell, L'Oreal and Walmart noted that while buyers were on track for reducing GHG's, their suppliers were not.  The buyers in the study represented a combined spending power of $1 trillion (US). The research marks the most comprehensive study done by the Carbon Disclosure Project with over 2,400 companies.  A few results:

• 73% of global purchasing companies say that climate change presents a physical risk to their operations
• 38% of suppliers are setting emission reduction targets compared to 92% of their customers
• 27% of suppliers are investing in activities to reduce emissions vs 69% of their customers
• 73% of Carbond Disclosure Project members are achieviong monetary savings, such as reduced energy costs from emission reductions while only 29% of their suppliers
• the 29% of suppliers that have reduced their emissions have saved more than $13.7 billion as a result.

You can expect large multi-national companies will increase pressure on suppliers to report Greenhouse Gases and implement reduction strategies in order to reduce corporate risk and increase profitability.  Now is the time to understand how to measure and report your Greenhouse Gases.

Steve has been active in the climate change community as a scientist and consultant for over 12 years. Steve received his Master of Science degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1998 and spent the next eight years working as a scientist at one of the world's leading climate change research centers at the University of New Hampshire. Greenhouse Gas reporting is underway for large emitters. Facilities who exceed the new 50kt CO2 equivalent GHG emission threshold must report their 2009 GHG emissions on or before June 1, 2010.

In addition in September 2009 the EPA issued its final rule on mandatory reporting of GHGs for emitters of over 25K tons a year starting in 2011 for the year 2010.
