Course Description

Track & Report your Business' Carbon (Greenhouse Gas Footprint) using Software

3435477Today Managers are increasingly under pressure by customers,  investors and stakeholders to track, report and manage Carbon (Greenhouse Gases).  The 2010 Carbon Disclosure Project Supply Chain report identified that 56% of its 3000 members are considering future deselection of suppliers for failing to meet carbon management criteria.

Carbon Management is here to stay and now is the time to look for long-term software solutions to measure &  track GHG’s.  However, software options can be expensive ($ 3,000- $ 30,000 and overwhelming.   We will help you “Keep it Simple”!

In this course you will:

  • Use a web-based GHG software tool to calculate your company's GHG emissions for one operational site.
  • Generate operational Key Performance Indicators and  “carbon footprint” labels for your products and services.
  • Explore how to confidentially link GHG’s through your supply chain.
  • Receive a 1-Year Membership to the CARBON COUNTED software($ 100 value).
  • Receive two FREE customized consultation sessions with a GHG Expert ( $ 200 value).
  • All encompassed in a 1 day Workshop with pre and post consultations.

Systematic Greenhouse Gas measurement and reporting is increasing and GHG software is an essential component to this trend.  Carbon management or GHG software helps companies run more effectively while at the same time maintaining compliance with industry standards.

These systems can:

  • Improve operational efficiency.
  • Communicate business metrics and performance indicators to stakeholders.
  • Differentiate operations, product, and brand.
  • Comply with regulatory mandates.
  • Mitigate the business risks of climate change.

In 2010 the percentage of companies that implemented or planned to implement carbon and energy management software systems more than doubled.  Today there are over 70 suppliers with some form of GHG and energy software product or service offering.

Customized Delivery for Your Business

This course takes place in 3 phases:

1. Initial customized telephone consultation with GHG Consultant.

During this phase Stephen will provide a complimentary consultation (maximum 60 minutes) to help you identify the scope, boundaries and primary GHG sources and GHG activity data that needs to be collected for  your project in this course.  We suggest that this occur several weeks before the course to allow the time for data collection.

2. A 1-day, hands-on Face to Face Workshop.

You will set up your CARBON COUNTED account, enter data, generate reports and labels.

 3.  A verification follow up telephone consultation.

Discuss steps for the completion and utilization of your GHG inventory and report.

Learning Objectives

Using a web based software tool you will calculate GHG emissions for a segment of your business, generate Product or Service Carbon Footprint Labels and generate a GHG report.

 You will  -

  • Work with an experienced GHG consultant to set up an actual GHG software account for your company and determine the correct boundaries, activities, equipment and standards that are relevant to your Carbon/GHG footprint.
  • Create your hierarchy of business units and facilities, set up users' individual permission rights and track the emission sources specific to your business.
  • Identify the GHG sources and activities for your facility.
  • Produce verifiable data using GHG protocols and emission factors for relevant emission sources, ensuring accuracy and transparency and saving time and money in searching for the correct Emissions Factors.
  • Learn how to track and report total business, business unit, facility and/or per product or service unit (intensity based) emissions.
  • Learn how to generate reports that can be used for various registries such as the Climate Disclosure Project or how to export the data and embed it into other reports such as the U.S. EPA, The Climate Registry, the Global Reporting Initiative or the framework of your choice.
  • Create and post your own product-based carbon footprint label to which your customers may link.
  • Learn what is required to submit your report to third-party verifiers.

Bonus:

  • Full access to the Sustainability Learning Centre's Community of Practice, a depository of learning materials and learning forum for all our courses including Carbon Disclosure Project Standards.
  • Attend this course and the prerequisite "Measuring & Reporting your Carbon (GHG) Footprint" and save $ 100 on the combined registration fee.

Prerequisites, Tools and Standards Used:

The Software:  Each participant will receive a 1 year Free Membership to the Open Platform Web based GHG Accounting Software by CARBON COUNTED (value $ 100).    This unique software can make real-time supply chain connections for a product’s or service’s GHG footprint.

Methodologies Supported:   This software supports the following standards: ISO-14064, World Resource Institute GHG Protocol, PAS 2050 and LCA.

Prerequisites:  Participants should have already taken the Sustainability Learning Centre course “Measuring and Reporting your GHG Inventory” or have a high level of knowledge of the requirements of the “GHG protocol, a Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, revised edition, World Resource Institute” and/or “ ISO 14064 part 1, Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals”.
