Our Education Philosophy -

Sustainability Focused Organizational Learning

"In the end sustainability cannot be achieved without innovation and innovation is best achieved in a culture that embraces learning". (Tilbury, 2004)

At the Sustainability Learning Centre we specialize in "sustainability focused organizational learning".  We find that people find their own connections between their current world and sustainability if we give them a clear, unbiased process for exploring the future. We help people create a new "memory of the future", a new vision of tomorrow.  This is most effectively achieved through "pedagogy of sustainability", which means that one learns about sustainability in a manner consistent with its principles.

Why is Sustainability Focused Organizational Learning (SFOL) important?

To manage the complexity of our lives we rely on a library of historical heuristics or "rules of thumb".  In organizations our heuristics, social relationships and organizational processes inform decisions and behaviour.  Building a new sustainability paradigm involves remaking these shared mental models, processes and social norms.  It also involves integrating a new level of systems, futures and critical thinking.

What does this mean in practice?

Successfully implementing sustainability requires an evolving, long-term strategy.  The strategy is holistic or system based (involving everyone and everything).  It is "future-focused" and sometimes seems contrary to our personal attitudes and beliefs. Switching to this new paradigm is not always an easy achievement in today's business environment. Organizations need to consciously set out to meet these criteria.

The good news is that Sustainability Focused Organizational Learning uses participants' current understanding as a foundation for sustainability implementation planning. A dialogue of inquiry, scenario planning ("double loop learning"), experiential systems thinking, and peer learning create a rich environment for building consensus and collaboration.

What are the elements of a Learning Systems Approach to Sustainability Focused Organizational Learning (SFOL)?

There are four key elements of a Learning Systems Approach SFOL

Elements

Characteristics of Organizational Learning for Sustainability

Pedagogy of Sustainability

  • Learning programs that embed Systems, Critical and Futures Thinking, Experiential Learning, program design is dialogical, peer based, and incorporates “Double Loop Learning”.  Communities of Practice are created.

Employee Engagement

  • Learning practices use Whole Employee Engagement approaches to the  “thinking, feeling, willing, social self”.

Green Core Competencies

  • Aligning new “green” core competency skills and knowledge with individuals throughout the organization.

Supporting Organizational Systems

  • Learning programs are supported by organizational processes: Structure, Leadership Practices, Communication and Information Systems, Reward and Recruitment processes, Measurement & Feedback Systems.
  • Use pilots as an experiential learning tool.
  • Use Systems Thinking to understand where to intervene in a system.
  • Use Planning and Decision Making Processes as experiential learning tool
